NYC
After a seven hour flight to NYC, a rough hostel stay for two nights, a breakfast of over 3000 calories and a carnivalisque performance event in Brooklyn I have arrived back in Blighty, back from Jonny Porkpie’s Cocks and Shocks night, http://www.pinchbottom.com and what a night it was, advertised and contextualized as ‘Jonny Porkpie’s Bad Ideas ‘SHOCKS & C*CKS: ALL NUDE, ALL DUDE REVUE.
Hosted by a naked (sometimes semi covered) Jonny Porkpie it featured Albert Cadabra’s wonderfully complex comedic escapology striptease, Ferro’s hot sensual hula hooping, Hard Corey’s clever bottle opening act in which he lampoons the patricarchal sexist male, Mat Fraser’s performative complications of the male sexual body through exotic and freak show stripteases and neocabaret songs, and finally Tigger’s comedic, high energy, camp, disco hot and beautifully twisted priest act.
To summarize this event I need to paraphrase Jonny Porkpie who set up this evening by openly and honestly giving his opinion that burlesque had gone beyond simple striptease, it was a performance art, and this evening was to be all about ‘the cock’. This event revealed beautifully the males last taboo, and with it, all the issues of revealing, the shrinkage, its’ comical shape, its pathetic-ness its massiveness, it potency and the performers own rescripting of it as an object of glamour, of athleticism, as a joke vagina and the celebration of the absolute togetherness of these physically, geographically and sexualy different males.
This event peeled away so many taboos and left exposed multiple ’tales’ to digest and acts to experience. It was a defining celebration of the male burlesquer and his craft. ‘We laughed back stage at our own shrinkage, or opposite, we cheered each others stage antics and lunacies, we aided each other as stage hands, we heckled from the bar, ‘COCK’ and it made me, British Heart want more. I passionately want to dig deeper into this art form of tease, sensuality, reveal, lunacy and irreverence. Challenging my supposed non performative maleness, and to interpret my own maleness and burlesque it. I want my naked body in huge tun of Gin, with bubbles, plastic pricks and a rubber Maggie Thatcher, all encompassed by a gaggle of spectators with drawn straws. I want to pound the stage as a high camp drag Tarzan, Disco beats and disco balls, kidnapping spectators and forcing them into awkward games of tease and peelfor my cannibalistic jungle chef preperations of grilled body bits. I want…
For me this one night said so much about the present state of burlesque. This event will be the final reveal for my PhD. The pages of my PhD leading to the final reveals we all made that night.
Uk male striptease updates
Well, I am back in the UK, and I have been recovering from the huge travel that is now behind me. Pinchbottom in New York has invited me to perform at a full cocks and shocks night, so I am puzzling over how to reveal the penis. I am drawing on many sources of inspiration however, presently, I will reveal none.
Saturday I performed at the Volupte Lounge, at the Candy Shop. Lovely night, I did the mouse, however I used the Squid’s performance narrative as a new frame work. Pretty successful I believe. My fellow performers were great, Kitty Bang Bang, Roxy Velvet, Bijous Noirand the Marquis de Gray.
I have also had some interview time with Tim the Eagle, Smokin McQueen, Bobbie Burlesque and Lara from the Whoopee. Today I will be interviewing Fred Bear, Thursday, Rasp Thorne and Beatrix von Bourbon and Friday Mister Joe Black down in Portsmouth. Lots of really interesting infomation turning up, detailing the reasons for starting. Fantastic. So the interview gathering is increasing, though scheduling is a nightmare.
How I will examine and interrogate these interviews is still a little out of my grasp, I know I will have to challenge the interviews validity, I know I will have to contextualize them socially, politically and economically. I would like to interrogate them as cultural products, for this I believe I will need cultural theorists, which will sit cheek by jowl with masculinities studies and gender theorists. Finally I know I will have write in a concise manner. Fuck. help anyone?
Melbourne Burlesque
Fighting off the floor destabilize effects of serious jet lag Foxtrot India and I ventured out into a rather cold Melbourne city to the find the Forum Theatre, where we we hoping to catch and hook up with an Australian Burlesque phenomena ‘The Town Bike‘
After a few jars of Cooper, we found the The Forum Theatre bustling with spectators. However what I did expect was the extraordinary beauty and play the interior designers of the Forum had created. With sofas, beach chairs, booths, a beach style bar with palm trees, a cafe selling cakes and quiches, and all this set within high walls decorate in mock Roman/Grecian pillars and figurines.
The show started with a presentation of pole dance, it was a solid a clear performance of erotic pole, with good technique. Later mini skits (50s kitsch aesthetic) were used to set up their routines. For me it highlighted the problematics of a male body performing such female sensuality. Still for me, I cannot see my masculinity being represented within this performance from without tensions arising, due to the reading of sensuality. I am still asking how the male body can fit into this performance form and be read as heterosexual. Of course there are performers that may offer pathways into finding my hetero-sensual male, Miss Glory pearl’s burlesque pole dancing or Remi Martins emotional male Chinese Pole act.
However for my own personal taste, the highlight of the night was ‘The Town Bikes’. Am Australian female duo that fucks everything right up. Twisted, comical, they layer with such grotesque subtly multiple representations of the female it is, for feminist studies, a wonderfully mezmerizing stew to savour. After their performances I asked them if they wished to be included in the PhD at which they smiled and hugged me. (Seriously nice girls) I feel ‘The Town Bikes” along with ‘The LBF girls’ , kleinkunst and Killpussy, along with Beatrix von Bourbon, Kitty and some others should provide a complex feminist landscape from which I must pluck the males.
Next, off to Japan for family meets, then Hong Kong for more Booze and back to the UK.
dashing, moving and stripping
Well, I am back from Paris, tired, booze weathered yet filled with zest from the Crazy Horse. And I now have a lovely forum up and running discussing the male burlesque over at the ministry of burlesque, visit, read, and add. http://www.ministryofburlesque.com/off-topic/12676-british-heart-boylesque-research.html#post130979
Beatrix Von Bourbon, Vicky Butterfly, Joe Black, Amanda Love have all been adding their views, so jump in if you can.
I was invited by the beautiful Lola la Belle http://www.myspace.com/lolalabelle to perform at the protest again Camden Council gig, COCO DE MER SHOW, however I will sadly be away. Damn, of all the places places in the UK where the Council should fully understand the potential of creative arts, yet sadly, this the red tape country. So for all those involved, kick em in the roses.
I’m around the globe on research interviews so might not blog for a while, however I will leave you with this. A Cocktail Tease. My new act. Please give ideas, what would you like to see me doing? Yum.
Chelmsford Fling Fest
Well, I its 12:26 and I have yet to shower and clean the make up off my face from last nights gig. A few hours of sleep on Jay’s sofa, and a very pleasant breakfast in his garden in Brighton this morning. So with a fuzzy head and a filthy body I will attempt to recall the Fling festival.
Beatrix Von Bourbon put together a great team, a solid and colourful variety, including classic stripteases from Vendetta Vain, mind boggling juggling from Remi Darbois, hilarious stand up and comedy sets from Anil Desai, spot on pole burlesque acts from Miss Glory Pole (give me that pole) Mysti Vines stand up talking vagina, funny, Miss Margot’s incredible balancing acts and Chrys Columbine’s delicate stripteases.
Sitting cheek by jowl with us in the cabaret tent were Miss Behave, Chris a modern clown and emcee and a team of soft ropers, clowns, and other such wonders.
For me, it went pretty well, the re-considered mouse is working well, its still a little messy and the confetti popper I am using is unreliable. I think I can play a little more with this act, fleshing out the wrongness that I am drawn to. Pubic hair cough ball methinks.
The Squid sadly suffered, due to the odd and constricting conditions the festival placed upon the venue. These included time constrictions, as well as power constrictions which after a day of the venue having power cuts and other technical problems, which had left us running late, left poor Chrys and myself and Mysti bolting through our final acts. So for me it was a bit blurry. Focus was placed on exiting rather than being.
However, bar the technical oddities and time issues, the team were incredibly professional and got through it all without throwing hissy fits, hats off to Miss Glory Pearl who continued her pole routine after both lights and sound had cut out.
Reflecting upon the night, mmmm, the heart is big and cumbersome, I want someone to design a slot together metal heart/pole, easily transportable for me, any sponsors please raise a hand. Next, I want to reconsider the squid and get the squid ink back. I’m thinking water bombs and paddling pools. I may also need to reconsider the scooter for venues without side stage entrances.
The rest of today will be rest, sorting out the costumes and perhaps doing a little reading.
HOT MUFFINS
Well, Its 1:30 am, and I have just arrived home in the deep south. Beer is in my hand and a toasty has already hit the belly. Hot Muffins was lovely, and I have to say this, Beatrix Von Bourbon, Missy Malone and Dolores Delight were exceptionaly nice gals. It was a fanatastically chilled event for me. I exhibited none of my previously wine filled slutty activities, cavorting amongst the audience mostly nude. I’ll leave that for madame Jo Jos. This time, it was layzing on the floor of a swealtering dressing room talking sausages with Missy, chilling out side chatting masculinities and cartoons with Beatrix, getting my ass spanked once or twice and generally enjoying a bit of peace in the Garden of the Oakford Working Mens Club.
Aims for this blog
By writing this I hope to dump the mash of striptease and burlesque information that I have stewing in my head. My task is to reveal to myself and to others the complexities of a historiography of boylesque. And forgive my spelling mistakes, sometimes, my fingers move faster than my head, please use this excuse for grammar and anything else. I wish to construct a historiography as the first part of my thesis as I have noticed gaps in the literature between US performance studies and social researchers and the UK from 2005. Furthermore there has been a rise in masculinities works alongside a recent surge male burlesquers yet no material exists examining these burlesque males., from the UK or US in depth.
I realise I will need to briefly detail the historical changes burlesque researchers and the researcher of sexual history have gone through, waves of differing feminist theorist’s perspectives of female sexual exhibitions from burlesques US inception. Modernist to post-modernists application of sexual performance. I will also need to highlight the rise, from the 1990s, of performance studies as a viable social studies research method alongside the rise of major critical discourses in Masculinities studies.
Problems I know I will encounter will be the credibility of the authors, whilst I will need to carefully navigate my own personal politics. I will need to acknowledge that no one group of facts make an intelligible structure and I will need to problematise the relationship between theory and practice.
My narrative will be constructed of key writings on striptease, stripping and burlesque as well as interviews with British, American and Australian boylesquers. Throughout this I will need to draw upon feminist, gender and masculinity works. Though the direction and form of this narrative is still beyond my comprehension. This I know I dearly want to find, and although I know my writing will need to be analytical, my art form, striptease, is playful. Through its reveals it both conceals and reveals and I wish my writing to follow suit. Is this possible for a PhD? I do not know.
Meanwhile, this weekend I will be choreographing the new mouse act. I have decided to make this one my strongest political and sexual act to date. This will test the limits and boundaries between the comedic and the social taboo and the stripper and striptease. I will also need to figure into this act some new speaking sections. Experimentation with the speaking stripper is exciting me at the moment as I follow the path of Gypsy Rose Lee.
